Hoyles Rulebook & Creative Parenting February 16, 2011

It was summer.  We had moved cities.  I was bored…very bored….  with a little sister that required significant attention from my Mom, and siblings that were teenagers and able to disappear from the house for most of the day.  A trailer sat waiting for excursions…but no holiday was happening soon.

What does a parent do?

Buy me a deck a cards and an “According to Hoyles” rulebook.   Send me out to the trailer for quiet space.

It helped my math, my logic, my reading. It taught me that I could pass time on my own.

Mom was smart.  She knew that I needed a space of my own.  She knew it would take me time to find my way in this city.  The trailer became my own private clubhouse.  I would sit at the table and play cards for hours on end.

That summer, I learned how to play every game of solitaire there was…and a few two games for two players where I played both hands.  Sometimes my Grandma would join me.

Sitting in the trailer, being allowed to invite neighbourhood kids in to play a game of cards..helped me to find my way.

Finally, the cards were left behind.

but no one did this poll…provide your input into which one you want.

Monopoly – the card game February 13, 2011

At games night last week, I was introduced to a few new card games.

One of them was Monopoly.  At first, I must admit to being a bit snooty about this new game.   One table had just finished playing the board game Monopoly for over an hour, how could this simple card game compare?.

Surprisingly, it was actually quite good.

What was even better, was YoungestSon popped in to watch,  and he moved in and started playing within the next hand, and then kept playing multiple hands.

It’s relatively simple to play…there is strategy and luck.

Definitely recommended as something to pack along for a camping trip or family vacation.

Reflections on the KOC wiki February 12, 2011

At first, I was thrilled with it…but I am wondering if either it is being editted by people who are unaware of the game or, if one were to be paranoid, intentionally misleading.

Example:

During the crest hunts, it was clearly stated, and not counterindicated that crests would fall from certain items.  Given that, a number of people would intentionally farm those items.  In fact, it was only when I quit farming those items that I got my crest.  Now, I don’t know the coding behind the crests; however, if it is based on it appearing once every x period of time, then it stands to reason, if you can get everyone hunting on one or two items, and you hunt the third…you are more likely to get your crest.

Example 2

Clearly incorrect analysis regarding statistics.

Example 3

Insufficient information, specifically regarding such key items as knights.

Now, you might say, Pinga, you are missing the point of a wiki, you should be going in and adding value.

The question becomes though….where does the bad information end.  Are the charts valid for speed, etc.  They appear to be, ie, the experiential matches the imperical.  How do you know though?  It means that all calculations need to be validated ingame.  A painful & slow process.

Farming – getting past the walls February 12, 2011

So, you want to start to farm inactives, but aren’t sure how.
As always, the wiki is a good place to start…
Consider there are three stages of farmers
1.  Learner —  Criteria might over 100k, non-allianced, at least 1 month inactive
2.  Intermediate — farm inactive, allianced,  1 month inactive, alliances rated at 200 to the end
3.   Advanced — farm inactive, allianced, alliances rated 50 to the end
4.   Expert — farm inactive from alliances

How do you identify inactive

Options include:
wander around your kingdom and watch their might for a few days — does it change, if not, then likely inactive
review the leaderboard, watch for members whose might doesn’t change
review the leaderboard, watch for alliances whose might doesn’t change

Who gives the best food?
regular farms  –‘

What about bots
As I believe bots create a two-tier system in game, and defeat the intent of a game, I will not discuss here.

Our next play date is on 2/18/2011.

Some of us are approaching 40.   Bob would like to ensure, that we won’t leave anyone behind.

The guild status page says to to hold at level 38. We still have several in the mid twenties so please try not to “creep” above 38.

Here is our current level  status:

Great work folks! (click on image to see larger image)

Battlegrounds?

There will be a vote to see if people are interested in some guild battleground runs. I know that PvP is not for everyone but will  throw it
out to a vote.

Would you like a day of Battlegrounds? We have several choices. Let Bob know your thoughts

ooooh...PvP anyone?

If we are doing battle grounds we can accommodate play with a range of
levels of 30 – 39.

5 mans?
If we wish to keep running 5 mans here is the list of 5 mans with the min
and max level to queue  Bob put an asterisk(*)  by the instances we can run on
the 18th.  Let’s  make sure that we move people in and out of groups
when running 5 mans.  Bob is thinking we  form up at the start of the
night and keep that group for the rest of the evening.

He  will call on the tanks to make sure they keep rotating players each
night.

Opportunities for 5mans

Sorry folks that I am late in giving the accomplishments, etc.   There was a tragedy in my circle of friends which required my real-life attention, as you will understand.  It also had an impact on worktime, so I had some catchup.  I must admit, I missed you.  Like Chuck and Brian and others have stated….this is a good group to hang out with.  See you soon.
